Andrews F-16 Tail Flash Dedicated to Honor Class of '80 Grad
The tail flash of the F-16 on the Air Force Academy terrazzo has a new look. During the Class of 1980's 40th reunion, a ceremony was held to dedicate the updated tail flash to honor Col. (Ret.) Bill Andrews '80. Andrews (1958-2015) was shot down near the end of Desert Storm but bravely provided warnings that saved two other pilots. For his actions, he received the Air Force Cross.

 

Cadet Morale Class of 2010 Leads Effort to Boost Cadet Morale
Returning to the Academy for its delayed 10-year reunion, the Class of 2010 celebrated the first year of its Endowment for Cadet Morale. Using funds collected from members of the class throughout the last decade, the endowment awards USAFA's Outstanding Squadron of the semester with $5,000 for activities that will boost morale.

 

Shwedo Reception in Colorado Springs Kicks Off Defining Our Future Campaign
The Defining Our Future comprehensive fundraising and engagement campaign in support of the Air Force Academy kicked off with a Colorado Springs reception on Sept. 24. Brig. Gen. Linell Letendre '96, dean of the faculty, and Lt. Gen. (Ret.) BJ Shwedo '87, Institute for Future Conflict director, spoke on a variety of topics to engage attendees.

Van Ovost Van Ovost Confirmed to Lead TRANSCOM
The U.S. Senate on Oct. 1 confirmed Air Force Gen. Jacqueline D. Van Ovost '88 to be the next head of U.S. Transportation Command, making her just the third woman ever to lead a unified combatant command.

 

Homer Class of 2024 Exemplar
The Class of 2024 held a dining ceremony to honor their class exemplar, Maj. LeRoy Homer Jr. '87 (1965-2001) — first officer of United 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. Maj. Homer's wife, Mrs. Melodie Homer, was one of the guest speakers for the evening.

 

Husky Strong Academy Prep School Commander Stays 'Husky Strong' in Battle with Cancer
Col. Melissa Youderian '98, commander of the Academy Prep School, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in April.

 

Babers Colorado Sports Hall of Fame
Alonzo Babers '83 was formally inducted with the 2020-21 class of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 29. He won two Olympic gold medals at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Harmon Lecture Harmon Memorial Lecture
Popular historians with ties to the Air Force Academy encouraged cadets to balance justice and mercy at the Harmon Memorial Lecture on Oct. 5. The annual lecture's namesake, Lt. Gen. Hubert Harmon, was the Academy's first superintendent.

 

Flowers Flowers Family Continues to Write Air Force History
The longest-serving airman in the history of the Air Force, retired Maj. Gen. Al Flowers Sr., was on stage as his grandsons — including Kendell Flowers, a cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy — pinned the first star on the uniform of his son, Al Flowers Jr., continuing an amazing legacy.

Hall of Fame Falcons Earn 24-14 Win Against Wyoming
A balanced Air Force attack fueled the Falcons to the program's best start since 2010, beating the Wyoming Cowboys 24-14 at Falcon Stadium. Air Force next travels to Boise State on Saturday night.
