10th ABW Greets New Commander
The 10th Air Base Wing said goodbye to one leader and greeted another at a Change of Command ceremony Friday, June 18. Col. Christopher Leonard '97 took over command from Brig. Gen. (Select) Brian Hartless in front of 10th ABW personnel, USAFA senior leaders, family and friends.


POWs Gather for Reunion Tour
The 2021 reunion of former prisoners of war (POWs) was conducted in Colorado Springs last week. Approximately a dozen former POWs from the Vietnam era were on hand for a tour of the United States Air Force Academy on June 17.


F-100 Plaque Dedicated at Plaza of Heroes
A crowd of more than 75 former F-100 pilots, crew members, USAFA graduates, friends and family members attended an emotional plaque dedication June 11 at the Southeast Asia Memorial Pavilion at the Air Force Academy. The special plaque — honoring and remembering those who flew the North American F-100 Super Sabre during the Vietnam War — joins 21 other plaques at the Plaza of Heroes honoring Air Force Academy graduates who flew or were crew members of various aircraft that were part of the conflict.


Virtual March Back
Let's come together as a USAFA family and support the Class of 2025! Though the in-person Graduate March Back has been cancelled for 2021, it's going virtual and expanding participation to the entire USAFA family! Between July 12-24, you are invited to join the USAFA community and walk, run or march 6.2 miles in support of the Class of 2025 cadets returning from Basic Cadet Training in Jacks Valley.

New Rocketry Club Launches on Campus
With support from the United Launch Alliance, a new cadet-led rocketry club is gaining attention on campus. The club, which launched last fall with 35 members, has already doubled its membership with plans to continue to grow.

Warrior's Edge Training Open to Three-degree Cadets
Warrior's Edge, a program that aims to strengthen the mind while teaching high-performance mindset skills that create psychological flexibility and mental strength, is being offered to three-degree cadets this summer. The donor-funded program was designed by Dr. Jannell MacAulay '98, a military combat veteran, Seattle Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll and psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais.

Saber Society Speaker Series
The Sabre Society of the Air Force Academy Foundation will present "The Way Forward for American Aviation" at 2 p.m. MDT, Thursday, July 8, exclusively for Sabre Society donors. Former Air Force Officer and F-15 fighter pilot and current FAA Administrator, Steve Dickson '79, will be the featured presenter. Inglis Assumes Nation's First Top Cyber Post
The Senate unanimously confirmed John "Chris" Inglis '76 as the first National Cyber Director as major cyberattacks continue to pummel the nation's critical infrastructure. Congress created the position in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2021, at the recommendation of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. President Joe Biden nominated Inglis to the position April 12.


Air Force Special Tactics Welcomes New Wing Commander at Hurlburt Field
As the new commander of the 24th SOW and its roughly 2,500 airmen, Col. Jason Daniels '98 is responsible for preparing Special Tactics forces to conduct global air, space and cyber-enabled special operations across the spectrum of conflict.


Dyess Command Change
Col. Joseph Kramer '99 became commander of Dyess Air Force Base and the 7th Bomb Wing at a change of command ceremony in a sweltering hangar with speeches briefly interrupted by the deep roar of planes taking to the air.


Sully Sullenberger Selected as U.S. Ambassador to ICAO
President Joe Biden is nominating C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger III — famed for his role in the successful "Miracle on the Hudson" emergency landing — to serve as the ambassador representing the U.S. on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization.


Westmoreland Becomes First Air Force Player to Make Cut at U.S. Open
Kyle Westmoreland '14 already made history becoming the first player from the Air Force Academy to qualify for the U.S. Open, and last weekend he became the first grad to make the cut at the U.S. Open.


Former Air Force Combat Pilot Brings Drone Soccer to America
A veteran Air Force combat pilot is working to make drones and robotics accessible to students through the emerging sport of drone soccer. The sport takes the typical after-school robotics club to the next level and may look slightly familiar to Harry Potter's Quidditch. Thanks to Maj. Kyle Sanders '08, it is making headway in the western US.


Meet the Astronauts of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory
The Center for the Study of National Reconnaissance hosted a panel discussion with USAF (Ret.) Col. Karol Bobko '59 and other astronauts of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory, a joint program with the Air Force in the late 1960s to launch a manned reconnaissance satellite into space for missions lasting up to 30 days.


National Aviation Hall of Fame
Dr. Paul Kaminski '64 was recently enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Dr. Kaminski is on the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Foundation and a former Distinguished Graduate Award honoree. While the hall of fame enshrinement event was postponed, the induction of the Class of 2020 was not. You can read more about Dr. Kaminski, who has been dubbed the father of all stealth programs, and the other aviation enshrinees online.


Academy's Field Engineering Readiness Lab Concludes Summer Operations
The top civil engineer at the Air Force Academy was excited to have the school's field engineering readiness laboratory — FERL — in action May 31-June 19 after the lab shut its doors last year due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Mahala Norris Claims NCAA Steeplechase Title
With a furious sprint to the finish line, recent Air Force graduate Mahala Norris captured the national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase June 12, during the final day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Recording the sixth-fastest time in NCAA history, Norris became the first Academy female to claim a Division I national title in a running event.

Maria Mettler Takes Third in NCAA 10K Final
• The incredible senior season of Mahala Norris continued June 20, as she advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials for track and field.
