Retired Col. Frederick Gregory '64 flew 550 combat rescue missions in Vietnam, earned competitive selection in the first class of Space Shuttle astronauts, was the first Black American to pilot a spacecraft where he accrued 455 hours in space, and served as NASA's deputy and acting administrator.

"One Book. One USAFA." debuted in the summer of 2020 at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Everyone at the Academy was encouraged to read Station Eleven, a novel by Emily St. John Mandel, to create at least one shared experience among basic cadets, returning cadets, senior leaders, military trainers and more.

Kunselman Wins Master's Thesis Award
Courtney Kunselman '18 earned the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools' 2021 Outstanding Master's Thesis Award in mathematics, physical sciences and engineering. She devised a new way to train machines to recognize small-scale structural features of various materials. Her findings will significantly reduce uncertainty when classifying new materials.

Specops Pilots Host 'Familiarization Flights' for Academy Cadets
Cadets got a high-altitude view of the Air Force Academy in a series of helicopter flights above Colorado Springs on April 24. The flights, hosted by pilots from the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, were part of the Academy's operations career field forums familiarizing cadets with aircraft and aircrews.

Maria Mettler Honored by Sportswomen of Colorado
Air Force senior Maria Mettler was named the 2021 Sportswomen of Colorado award winner in track. She had an impressive indoor campaign on the track in 2020 capturing All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run and a Mountain West title in the 3,000-meter run.
