Former Basketball Star Takes Command of Yokota's 374th Airlift Wing
The Air Force's largest transport hub in the Far East has a new leader. Col. Otis Jones '95 took command of Yokota Air Base and the 3,500-strong 374th Airlift Wing on July 20, 2018. He has more than 3,000 flying hours in T-37, T-44, C-130 and C-17 aircraft, and is also the second-highest scorer in Air Force Academy basketball history.

Laidlaw Takes Command at Tyndall
As commander, Col. Brian S. Laidlaw '97 will lead more than 4,000 personnel who train and prepare F-22 pilots, intelligence officers, maintainers and other support specialties for worldwide assignment to combat Air Force units. In addition, the wing hosts numerous tenant units and provides support to more than 23,000 airmen, civilians, contractors and their families.

USAFA Class of '18 Grad Named Mountain West Female Scholar Athlete of Year
Jinan Andrews '18 graduated from the Air Force Academy in May with a bachelor's of science in systems engineering. She excelled in the classroom and maintained 3.72 GPA. As the women's swim team captain for the 2017-18 season, she set several Academy records, including in the 100-freestyle, 200-freestyle and 800-freestyle relays. Overall, Andrews is on the Air Force's top 10 list in seven events.

For his 16th birthday, Lance Wach '12 received the gift of flying lessons with flight instructor Dick Trail '59. Twelve years later, Wach is a U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jet pilot. When he's not flying, he's driving farm machinery and helping with this year's wheat harvest.

2nd Lt. Alison Skidmore '17 fell in love with soccer at the tender age of 5. Skidmore, now chief of Customer Support in the 78th Force Support Squadron at Robins, pursued her passion in college, playing Division 1 soccer at the U.S Air Force Academy before commissioning as a second lieutenant in 2017.

Yokley Makes Perfect Landing from Air Force to Bullpen
Lt. Ben Yokley '15 spent the last two seasons in the U.S. Air Force, but now he's with the Peoria Chiefs trying to get his professional baseball career off the ground. The right-handed reliever -- who can touch 97 mph with his fastball -- was the first pitcher in the history of the MLB Draft to be taken from the Air Force Academy.

Air Force Wins 2018 National Capital Region Commanders' Cup Golf Tournament
On July 16, 2018, 26 Air Force Academy grads (from as far away as Georgia) participated in the 11th edition of the Commanders' Cup held at Westfields Golf Club located just outside the nation's capital in Clifton, VA. The Academy grads formed 13 teams and competed against Army and Navy graduate teams in four-ball competition. Air Force won 9 of their matches to take home the Commanders' Cup for the sixth time. Thanks to all who participated. Air Force profits from the tournament will be donated to the Air Force golf team.

Air Force Academy Cadets Design, Build Trail Bridge
Through a unique partnership between the Air Force Academy and the White River National Forest, work is underway to improve the McCullough Gulch Trail bridge. Cadets spent the last year designing and, most recently, building the bridge.

Group of Veterans Meets Every Month for 20 Years
On the second Wednesday of every month for the last 20 years, a group of veterans ranging from World War II to the Vietnam eras have met, talked and broken bread. There was a special visitor recently as Sarah Childs, a cadet at the Air Force Academy, met with the veterans. She's looking forward to the day the baton is handed to her.

To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors, a college or university must carry a team GPA of 3.0 or better during the entire academic year. Air Force is the only service academy team to make the 18Birdies All-Academic team.
